Mitta Mitta is a tiny hamlet in north-east Victoria situated at the junction of the Mitta Mitta River and Snowy Creek. Nestled below Mount Welcome it is located on the Omeo Highway, a major link between northern Victorian and Gippsland. The area was first occupied by early pastoralists in 1835 but in 1852 gold was discovered at Mitta Mitta and it was gold fever that built the township (population now approx 89) over the next 65 years. Gold mining was mostly alluvial with the dominant enterprise being the Pioneer Mine, the third hydraulic sluicing mine to be commenced in Australia. This profitable open-cut mine yielded 442 kgs of gold until 1904 when a prolonged drought forced cessation of activities. The Mitta Mitta River was dredged yielding 167 Kgs of gold but this operation was never profitable. Today the Mitta Valley is home to dairying and cattle production, and increasingly, eco-tourism.
ATTRACTIONS Mitta is Mecca for trout and Murray Cod fishing, canoeing, bush walking and as a touring base for an extensive network of 4WD tracks. A network of walking tracks provides access to the magnificent views of the Valley and the historical mining sites around the town.
The town has a 9-hole golf course, tennis courts and a picturesque picnic and swimming area on Snowy Creek.
The Witches Garden is a local landmark featuring the largest collection of medicinal plants in Australia.
