Colossus
A great day exploring Bletchley Park in the UK. Next door at the National Museum of Computing is the famous Colossus, pivotal in code breaking during WW2. It was being restored to again work by a group of volunteer enthusiasts. An amazing accomplishment for the time. We spent hours discussing the intricate systems and design and were amazed at the massive number of valve swtiches. The same museum held a variety of early mainframe computers several of which were spookily familiar. My mainframe experience started in 1972 with a University of Melbourne program followed by programming (COBOL, Fortran, ALGOL) and extensive mainframe computer operation.
I built my first (very basic) computer out of electronic bits, when I was 17, it couldn't do much but gave me an understanding of the then basics. Since then I've continued programing in the various languages being offered.
So I take my hat off to those who developed Collosus, accomplished in a very short time and helped change the outcoime of WWll.
