Sydney Jazz
The Music
Another great music night, this time John Morrison's Swing City Big Band with special guest - his famous brother - James Morrison. The 16-piece band has been around a long time, slick, sharp with some of the best in the business. Of course, James Morrison was the star of the show, easily one of the best musicians Australia has produced. Whilst the trumpet is the headliner, he is also proficient with the trombone, tuba, euphonium, flugelhorn, saxophone, clarinet, double bass, guitar, and piano. He gave the keyboard a spectacular rendition of Autumn Leaves with amazing dexterity, a seemingly easy transition from the trumpet. The Venue
Sydney's heritage State Theatre is a magnificent place to listen to such a great concert. I found it interesting that the opening night's performance in 1929 featured noted bandleader Will Prior, who was described in the programme as a conductor capable of lifting "jazz to perfection in a sublime miscellany of melodious rhythm" The legend lives on!
